Au Naturel vs Made-up
Posted on 20. Jan, 2012 by Glow Images.
It’s the little things that make the difference in life. . . and in advertising, as it turns out. The tone of your project can be set by details that may seem inconsequential in the early stages of design. A prime example of this can be seen when selecting images with models.
When the direction is to “Insert photo of pretty woman here”, designers and art directors are faced with an important decision. Something as simple as the cosmetics used on the model can determine the tone for the entire ad. To put it in its simplest form, it’s the “au naturel” look vs the “made-up” look. Of course, both looks require a certain amount of cosmetics, but the stylings and focus vary drastically.
For example, any kind of ad for a health product will call for models with a clean look, like they just woke up, brushed their hair, washed their face, and voila: naturally beautiful. Most importantly, the model’s skin should have a natural glow. Healthy skin equals healthy lifestyle, which makes people feel good about a product. No dark eyeliner or eyeshadow. No bright lipstick. Minimal hairstyling. Anything that detracts from the flawless skin of the model can only be a detriment. Au naturel is the winner. Other ads that may fall under this category: hearty foods, activewear, comfort clothes, family products.
On the other hand, an ad for a perfume or fashion accessory calls for a model with a more glamorous look. Sex appeal pulls rank over health, in this case. A model with a sexy look will make people feel something a little more fun, luxurious, and intriguing, like a night on the town. The made-up look is the winner. Other ads that may fall under this category: snack foods, cars, alcoholic beverages, personal electronics, music.

Relax. We’ve Got That.
Posted on 20. Jan, 2012 by Glow Images.
In an increasingly health-conscious world, health and wellness imagery has never been more popular than it is right now. Fortunately, stock photo producers are ahead of the curve on this one. Glow Images deep library includes a wide variety of images focusing on health and beauty treatments, from the spa to right at home. So, if you are looking for some of those harder-to-find shots for your health and beauty projects, you’ve come to the right place.
Moxibustion – Having nothing to do with Moxie and everything to do with getting your Qi flowing, this traditional Chinese therapy uses mugwort to induce the flow of energy through vital points on the body.
Hot Stone Therapy - This treatment uses flat, smooth stones that are heated in water then placed on certain points on the body. The heat works to help soothe and relax the muscles making a deeper massage possible.
Hay Bath - Bathing in hay may seem like an odd thing to do, but this Italian practice has been going on for 100+ years. The heated hay opens up pores, which helps in detoxifying.
Color Therapy - Color therapy works much like acupuncture, but it uses beams of colored light rather than needles.
Gold Massage - This massage uses an oil containing pure gold particles. Just in case you were worried that this will leave you looking like the Tin Man’s rich cousin, the gold will not be visible after being thoroughly massaged in.
This just barely scratches the surface! Visit our Spa and Beauty Treatments gallery for these and more.

Hot Buttery Popcorn

Today is Popcorn Day. Although mostly unofficial, it is still worthy of some attention. Perhaps, it has something to do with the strong connection between smell and memory, but popcorn is one of those foods that makes you feel good.
With probably its strongest connection being to movies, it’s no wonder that most people have a good mental association with popcorn. Unless they happened to be watching Gigli. But seriously, folks…
For more popcorn images, please visit our Popcorn Day gallery. Movie theater, microwave, air popper, caramel, kettle. We don’t discriminate.
