While it is not wise to judge a book by its cover, there is nothing saying you can’t judge a movie by its poster. Nobody seems to be better and more ridiculously awesome than the horror film industry.

From over-the-top taglines and excessively bloody fonts to creepy images and a scantily-clad, attractive  damsel, you’ll often find these to be the most entertaining posters. It’s a simple formula for making an impression on moviegoers. Let’s take a look at a few classics. Click on each for a closer look.

To the left, we have a truly horrible work of horror (if you’ve seen Pieces, you know what I mean), which has been accurately described as “a masterpiece of early 1980s sleaze.” And the poster captures it pretty accurately. With the double tagline and an age restriction displayed prominently, you know that teenage you would have been all over this.

Next (right) is a less than classic film from the 70′s, Rattlers. As you can see all the elements are there for horror movie poster success. This might be the only movie where a herpetologist is the hero. It’s been called the “Plan 9 from Outer Space of snake movies“.

Lastly (below), we have a classic from the late 50′s, How to Make a Monster. Spooky font. . . check. Creepy imagery. . .check. Ridiculous tagline. . . check. Attractive, scantily-clad woman. . . check.
