As many students prepare to go off to college (some dragging, some at a full gallop), possibly leaving their last real summer behind unbeknownst to them, there are some “important” things they should know about entering the college realm.  For all you seekers of knowledge, this is for you:

  • You will see an increased use of air quotes as almost everyone, including the professors, have adopted Sarcasm as their official language (see example above)
  • Syllabi is a real word that you will hear repeatedly
  • Anyone with  a car on campus is your best friend
  • You will test the theory that you can eat fast food for every meal. You will find success at first, but there will be diminishing returns.
  • 8 o’clock classes will seem like an awesome idea. . . for the first week
  • Despite every attempt to start writing your papers a week before they are due, you will inevitably stay up all night writing them the night before they are due
  • Almost every book you need will be checked out of the library unless you majored in Bagpiping or the Bowling History and Physics
  • You will see lots of Greek letters, but less people who have read Plato
  • In an English class, you will claim to like a work of literature because the “story is good”. While this brings the wrath of your professor and a few English majors, you are actually are in the right.
  •  You will become an expert in daytime television, with many of your afternoons set to the sweet sound of Law & Order’s “dun-dun”.
  • Pay attention and you might just learn a few things
