The Nation Spotlight series has taken you all over the world to see some of the best stock photos from some of our favorite destinations. Now, we would like to take you on a tour of the US with our new series, Road Trip. In this series, we will take you to US destinations, places you could hop in your car and drive to. We will find a route and see what wonders exist along the way. Our first expedition will be along the world-famous Route 66. We’ll start in Illinois and make our way west to California. Crank the Molly Hatchet and let’s roll!

Odell, Illinois – This Standard Oil gas station in the small town of Odell now serves as a Route 66 visitors’ center and is a good place for our first stop.

Meramec Caverns, Missouri - Besides being a spectacular spelunking site, this was also the one-time hideout of the infamous outlaw Jesse James and his gang.

Tucumcari, New Mexico – It wouldn’t be a real Route 66 road trip without a stay at a vintage hotel. The Buckaroo Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico will have all the retro-ness we could ask for.

Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona - Just a slight detour off the main Route 66 stretch, the Petrified Forest National Park is too good to pass up. It is not far from Holbrook, Arizona, an outlaw town of the Old West once known to be “too tough for women or churches”.

Calico, California – Calico is a restored ghost town near Barstow, California. This former silver mining town is now an interesting historic site open to tourists. It has full service campgrounds, cabins and several shops and restaurants.

Thanks for riding along! We made excellent time and saved a ton on gas. Enjoy more Route 66 images in this gallery.
